504 rice has been dubbed rice as "Poverty alleviation." Indeed, because it is relatively low priced. This is a short-term rice variety grown in the Mekong Delta region, with good pest resistance and high yield. The grain of rice is large, milky white, the rate of chalky is relatively high.

The grain of the rice is white ivory white, slightly broken rice. Due to its high Amilose content, IR50404 rice has a dry but sweet texture and is porous when cooking slightly broken rice.

Vietnamese white rice 5% Broken is also a rice developed from the IR50404 (or IR504) rice variety of the International Rice Institute IRRI. IR504 has been experimentally grown in fields in the Mekong Delta since 1992. Later, this rice variety was developed, expanding the cultivation scale in the following years.

Average particle length is approximately : 6.2 mm. The amylase content is very high 26% (> 25%). When cooked the rice is slightly broken and dry but the taste is slightly sweet and porous.
